Mike McCann was an integral part in making Proteus what it is today. He was a great Ambassador to our sister agencies and partner organizations as well as a mentor to many of us at Proteus. He will be dearly missed.

Mike joined Proteus in 1984 and brought with him an open mind and heart to assist and mentor others. His educational and work experience background enhanced by his natural leadership ability led to his acceptance of employment as a Data Systems Manager where he brought the organization into the 21st century with new reporting and accounting systems. Although he was a “technical” person, Mike’s passion to serve others led him to become well versed in the needs of the communities being served by Proteus as well as programs being operated by the organization in order to understand how the needs were being met and in what other areas these communities could be served.

After 10 years, armed with technical, fiscal, and program knowledge, Mike moved into the position of Chief Financial Officer. He served in this position long enough to gain assets for Proteus that brought them more stability. In 2000, Mike succeeded his longtime friend and mentor, Bill Maguy, as the CEO of Proteus, Inc. Under his leadership Proteus, Inc. received the California Award of Performance Excellence (CAPE) Prospector Award in 2004 and the California Award of Performance Excellence (CAPE) Eureka Award in 2007. Mike McCann’s compassion to serve others extended beyond Proteus, Inc. He served on the Board of Directors of La Cooperativa, an alliance made up of Organizations who serve Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers in the Western United States. He also served as Treasurer of the Western Alliance Farmworker Advocates (WAFA), and on the California Association Reentry and Employment Services.

Mike’s heart for the Migrant and Seasonal Farm workers as well as Disadvantaged Adult and Youth comes from his own personal life experiences. Prior to coming to Proteus, Mike worked in many areas. As a young man he even spent some time as a farm worker himself in Oregon and even served in the Navy. The time spent on a “pear orchard” and the people he met there and during his time in the Navy, etched memories in his mind that he recalls to this day. Undoubtedly, those memories provide him with insight into the needs of today’s farm workers, underemployed, and unemployed. All of his past life experiences have built the core foundation of Mike’s continual values and goals to serve and assist those in need.
